A Turkey in Ellanor Lawrence Park

Sunday, May 23, 2004, on a walk in the North Loop, my dogs suddenly charged into the bushes. As I hauled them back on their leashes, an enormous creature leaped out, making lots of noise and clearly angry. It was a turkey, larger than I expected, moving quickly, deeper into the woods. As we walked on, it disappeared from view. On a hunch, I walked back to where we'd first encountered it, and the turkey quickly returned, fluttering and noisy, clearly wanting to lead us away from what I imagine was a nest or a chick or two.

I had time for a few quick pictures before we moved off to leave the bird in peace.

All this took place between 11:21 and 11:22 am. EDT, in Ellanor Lawrence Park, Centreville, Virginia, USA.
